Aftermath of an Average Miracle

The "Not So F*%@?#! Serious" group show that kicked off this past Friday (October 21st) at Unsmoke Artspace in Braddock, PA was certainly something to experience. Braddock was the appropriate setting for this eclectic and excited assemblage of artists, all working feverishly in the Pennsylvania region at one time or another. The landscape of Braddock consists of belching steel mill activity (across the street from the venue), lonely buildings and kind-hearted people.

The show was a relative success, considering the location and distance from Pittsburgh. Attracting around 100 guests throughout the evening, fun was in large supply and no bad vibes were generated or received. We'll be planning a closing reception for those that missed the opening or those that want to come back for more. Likely the closing activities will occur around the weekend of the 11th, 12th and 13th, which day exactly is undetermined at this point.

Last night all of us comic makers and zinesters were in attendance for the 1st ever Pittsburgh Zine Fair. The event was surprisingly well attended for it being only the first year and that we only had 2 months in which to organize it. Pittsburgh Zine Fair

Well this is coming fast. The first ever Pittsburgh Zine Fair is set to take place on September 1st, 2011 from 5-10pm at AIR (Artist Image Resource) on the North Side. The event will feature zine/comic and independent publishers/retailers from Pittsburgh and beyond, workshops, music, food, acivities and much more fun to be announced. I've been attending all of the organizing meetings at Filmmakers and it has been a hoot. So far I've been responsible for a lot of the illustration needed for print and web promotional materials. I'm working on finishing the poster/flyer tonight and I'll be sure to show off the black and white or if I work hard enough the color version.

Pinball Machine Playing Field

It's been weeks in the process, but I've finally finished the playing field for the pinball machine that I'm working on. Sorry for the cell-phone quality pics. Now all that's left to do is the backglass, elevated portions of the playing field, bumpers, light inserts, skirts and side panels of the cabinet.

Polish Hill Arts Festival (part deuce)

So I finished up the poster for the Polish Hill Arts Festival a few nights ago. It's a 3-color creature and took a surprisingly long time to finish coloring. Unfortunately the art I made wasn't proportionate to a tabloid size, but I think I compensated well with the extra white space. I plan to also screenprint a larger version, but it will likely be in just one color.

Braddock Again ~ Invasion

Hello to all. I want to post about this, but I'm not sure how much I can leak to you as it's still in it's infancy. So for now I'll be giving you the bare bones and therefore just teasing you.

Over the past 2 months I've been organizing, with Maggie Negrete and a few other folks, a group art show in Braddock, PA at the artspace Unsmoke Systems. The show is set to happen mid-October, the Opening Reception on October 21, 2011. The prospective artists have already been selected, a good handful have since agreed through informal conversations. We'll be sending out our proposal to a little over 20 Pittsburgh based artists next week. The name for the show is not yet decided, but by tomorrow it will be finally decided.

The show will be based in installation, traditional art exhibiting (framed pieces, sculptural, etc.), experiential and on-site/site specific painting or multi-media. So essentially it's a creative free-for-all of sorts. We don't have total creative freedom in this space, but the gallery owner/operator, Jeb, is an awesome dude and is allowing us a lot of flexibility. That is actually the primary reason for having it in Braddock at this particular location. The hardest part will be promoting this and convincing people to travel all the way to Braddock just for an art show. So start spreading the word now. Unfortunately that is all the information I can release at the moment. Once all of the artists have been confirmed I'll make a more complete post. Until then just wallow in your own anticipation please!

Adlib Comic & Polish Hill Arts Festival

So I'm programming a comic and bookmaking workshop during the Polish Hill Arts Festival on July 17th. I've never done something quite like this. What you see above is a 4 page adlib comic that participants can create their own characters/story. I'm not sure how well this is going to work or how interested people will be in completing a partially realized sequence of panels. It's an experiment in that regard. I'm trying to come up with some additional activity ideas to complement this one because undoubtedly there will be some young kids and they'll need a project that's easy to do and more importantly fun. I've been talking with Nate and he's expressed interest in doing some sort of cartooning demo or collaborative activity.

In addition to working an activity table there I'll also be there with selling Andromeda comics, prints, paintings and other crafty junk. Also be on the look out for the poster/flyer for the Arts Festival in your neighborhood/community in the coming weeks. Below is an early concept with no color. Once finished there will be a digitally colored 8.5" x 11" version, a larger screenprinted poster and screenprinted handbills of which the designs are not yet completed. Those handbills will likely be steeped in traditional Polish folk patterning and textile design. Hope that you can all make it for this festival. Last year was my first year and I can say with confidence that it's the coolest arts festival in Pittsburgh. Yes, even cooler than the Three Rivers Arts Festival!

Barnstorming!

Over the Memorial Day weekend I travelled back to my origins in Ohio to a little town called Coshocton. It's a quaint place where people mostly hang out at Wal Mart and do drugs, well not at Wal Mart, but who knows maybe.

Anyways the point to all of this is that while I was visiting with the family I ran into a friend of mine by the name of Jason McCurdy. McCurdy has been organizing a group to construct a new and rad skatepark there in town. In order to raise funds he's putting on a benefit punk/metal show this weekend with all proceeds going towards the cause. He asked if while I was in town I'd be interested in painting the deck of a skate bowl inside of the barn where they're having the show. I guess to add some pizz-zazz to the atmosphere. Of course I agreed and the next day we went to work. I started painting around 5pm on Saturday and wasn't finished until 5 am on Sunday. 12 hours of painting on a floor!! My knees, back, ankles and well everything are still killing me. It was definitely worth it though. Huge challenge and I'd do it again, maybe not for free next time.....

Well those are all the pics I got, unfortunately they're all done with a cell phone, but you get the idea. It was quite a process for one night. If you'd like me to come and paint something that you own give me a holler and chances are that I'll do it because I'm a glutton for punishment and plus I like to keep busy. Enjoy yourselves!

Pinball Machine Contest

A couple of weeks ago Wildcard, an awesome consignment shop here in Pittsburgh, announced a contest for a local artist to design and paint a 1970s vintage pinball machine. Brian, who co-owns and operates the shop, approached me and asked if I'd submit a design. So I said what the hell and gave it a shot.

A week or so later Brian calls me up and informs that I won and asked if I was up for the job. At first I was hesitant, not knowing anything about doing something of the sort, but I agreed of course. So now I have just about a month to make further designs, paint the different parts of the machine and finalize everything in time for the opening reception in July. I'm still very intimidated by the whole project, but I like challenges and feel confident that I can knock this thing out with a killer execution.

After the reception and show at Wildcard, where the finished machine will be on display, the game will be transported to be displayed at the World Pinball Tournament which happens to be in Pittsburgh this year. As things develop I'll post more pictures of the process and finished product. Cross your fingers folks, the clock is a-tickin'

Wild Kindness

Howdy y'all! I want to make you hip to a new record label that is out there in our universe. They're called Wild Kindness, yes derived from that Pavement lyric. It's a DIY independent label based out of Youngstown, OH and is driven by my good friend David Pokrivnak. He's doing lots for burgeoning and talented musicians in the region of Ohio, Pennsylvania and other possible neighboring states. The label is still in it's infancy, but is quickly gaining steam. Not only do they represent musicians, but also visual artists. At the moment the only artists on the label are myself and Katy Gould.

There's a lot of potential in this project and the label is currently trying to extend it's reach for booking and distribution in Pittsburgh. So if you're an avid music lover and you like what you hear from the artists on Wild Kindness, then please shoot me or David a message and let us know. The more positive feedback we receive from the community, the more likely it is that Wild Kindness will be premiering more shows in Pittsburgh. Handmade Arcade

This year, the year I decide to not waste my time and effort, my friend Artnoose had a table and offered me the opportunity to third the table with her. I agreed, made some loot and had a great time! Well worth it.

I recently acquired some turquoise ink at Michael's Art Supply and was experimenting with it. I utilized it on this intro page for Andromeda #12 in a light way. The figure in the middle is based upon my brother's friend, Eagle, I met about two weeks ago while visiting him down in Kentucky. Eagle is one of the most interesting characters I've ever met and just had to draw him. I swear, a whole novel could be written on the subject of this guy. Who would read you ask? Well, obviously I would!

First Color Comic I've Ever Made.

This is the first color comic I've ever done. It was all drawn in micron .001 pens (brown, red, blue, green, purple and black). The next time I make a color comic I think it will be drastically different. For example I won't limit myself to using micron color pens only. Too laborious.

My friend David Pokrivnak, fantastic artist and even better musician, has been working with some other great folks to establish a small record label called Wild Kindness. He was looking around for artists to create some work for some of the bands/shows that are upcoming. I agreed of course because I truly am inspired by folks out there doing the work that they know will make them happy and satisfied. The design above was screenprinted in 3 colors for a show in May. The browns and greens came out darker than desired. Still trying to get a handle on the ins and outs of printmaking. Very delicate medium.

ROCK SHOW, DUDE!

The illustration above was created to promote an art show in January 2011. The concept for the show focuses on the beauty in art utilized, throughout music history, for concert or performance posters. The type of music can be extended to just about any genre, the title is just a clever bit of humor. This is the first opportunity I've had to curate a show and I am proud to include all 16 wonderful artists.

There are about 170 handbills and fliers each. They will be distributed amongst friends and then we'll canvas the surrounding Pittsburgh neighborhoods. I expect this to be an interesting evening as we will be providing special refreshments (a Rock themed cake), booze, live mind-bending music and nothing but GOOD VIBES. Hope to see you all there.

Last month all of us comic book pariahs assembled here in Pittsburgh for PIX, the first independent comics expo in the city. The man who made it all possible, Bill Boichel (Copacetic Comics Co.) asked Nate and I if we would be interested in making a mini-comic for the expo that would sort of introduce people to the venue and acquaint them with the general attitude of the expo. We agreed and came up with pages shown above. The first two are the front and back covers, the rest are interior pages. It was great project and we had a blast drawing it. I have some extra copies if you'd like one for yourself.

Andromeda #7

Last month's issue, #6, was done up in a 2-color silkscreened cover. When shown to Ed Piskor, he remarks "You do know that you have to screenprint your covers from now on, right?" The thought had not occurred to me, but he's right. There is no turning back from this, I have to keep up this aesthetic. So for as long as I can manage Andromeda will feature a color cover. Enjoy!

Hello folks, I'm here to tell you about something new and exciting that's rapidly approaching the fair city of Pittsburgh. It's PIX, Pittsburgh's first annual Independent Comics Expo presented by Copacetic Comics Company, Toonseum and sponsoring in part from The Sprout Fund. The event is to be held on October 16th and 17th, 10 am - 5pm each day on the top floor of the newly renovated Guardian Storage Facility at 2839 Liberty Avenue (in the Strip District). It's open for free to the general public and vendor/creator tables are only $25. If you'd like a table be sure to do so soon because this event is shaping up to be worthy of notation considering it is only in it's infancy. Special guests confirmed for panels and such include, but are not limited to: Kevin Huizenga, Ed Piskor, Jim Rugg, Frank Santoro, and Tom Scioli.

I will also be there dishing out issues of Andromeda including the release of #6 to the masses. Also in attendance will be Nate McDonough of GRIXLY comics and Stephanie Neary, creator of various minis and gnarly drawings abound (cross your fingers for her attendance). I hope to see all of you there. We really need your support for this one Pittsburgh, I mean why wouldn't you come, IT'S FREE!!

The Walkmen commissioned me to illustrate and screenprint 150 posters in promotion of their new album "Lisbon". The design above is essentially the one that ended up on paper, except for a few last minute design changes. This was an exciting endeavor and the first time I've ever attempted to print using three colors. It was quite a challenge and I feel like I've learned a great deal about the intricacies involved in screenprinting.

Hello folks. Number three was a bit late this month, about 2 weeks to be exact. For the 3rd issue I asked everyone to create their submissions based around the theme of "art school". The results were fantastic and I am proud to say that this one is one of my favorites so far. If you'd like a copy you can pick one up on my etsy for only $2.

Since #3 was a bit off schedule I plan to extend the deadline for #4 until the !st of August. There is no theme for this one so feel free to send me something of your choosing. Everything concerning image size and file format that applied to previous issues also applies to #4. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

I'm starting to compile everything for #3 and hope to have a bunch of copies sometime before the end of next week. I finally broke down and bought a monochrome laserjet printer after all these months of freeloading printing services. It should be here by the weekend or Monday hopefully. Then I can truly get down to business.

This will be the cover for this issue, I'm also thinking about screenprinting this and making it available as a poster as well. Not sure on the idea yet, more to come....

As some of you may or may not already know Andromeda #2 has made it's debut release this week with a first print run of 80 copies. There are still some left, so be sure to get yourself one soon. However that is not the point of this message.

I hope that none of you are starting to grow weary of these bombardments from myself. Because I'm afraid that there is not an end in sight at this moment. Onto pressing matters, though. The turn-out of contributors for #2 was pretty impressive and proved helpful in making the issue a reality and a success. I hope to keep this momentum and interest steady into the next issue. So I want all of you to attach your creative apparatuses for your next masterpiece and passing along the word to friends, family and strangers.

The deadline for No. 3 will be June 20th, 2010. It's the same drill as before, send it to my email at littletired@gmail.com
Be sure that your file size is at least 150 dpi (dots per inch) and at least 7" x 7"

The ideal content for this issue will be a bit different from last month. This time around I would like to try limit content to a theme. I don't intend to limit needlessly though. Without further ado I present the theme for #3:

"Art School"

Now remember I want to keep this open and sort of vague. For example one person might submit a small story, a 2-3 pager, about the misadventures of the social circles in art education, another might choose to draw an intricate depiction of their alma mater and still another fellow might draw various perversions of classmates with description. I am not particular about whether it's fiction, non-fiction, how-to, informational, poetic, iconic, relational, or any other absurd genre one could dream up. I am most interested in experiencing other's interpretations of this vague subject matter.

Sorry this becoming so long but I have one thing left to add. I will be printing No. 3 on legal paper, this means that all submissions should be designed within a 7"x 7" square.

Andromeda is a new monthly, comic anthology originating in Pittsburgh and edited/produced by Little Tired Press. This new publication seeks to expose and incubate the mass of talent surrounding not just the Pittsburgh region, but also anywhere else in the world where good work may be hiding. The first issue was released prematurely this month for the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo in Columbus, OH last weekend and primarily featured work from myself. As mentioned previously the intent for this publication is to feature an array of artists working in the comic form and this is still the case. Whether one draws, writes or creates on any other variation of the form they are encouraged to make a submission. This project is slowly gaining momentum, but cannot accelerate without the help of all of you passionate folks out there.
Deadline submissions are May 21st, 2010, but I am willing to accept them a little later if needed. Images sent should be .jpg format and no more than 10 Mb each. All submissions should be sent to littletired@gmail.com, by mail to: 4230 Sherrod St. Apt. #2, Pittsburgh, PA 15201 or gimme a call at: 740-610-8836.

It's been a little over 1 month since I've threw anything up on this here blog. It has been a rough winter and motivation was running on low. I feel a bit more inspired with the change of weather and other worthy causes are instilling determination. At the end of the month I'm heading up to SPACE in Columbus (alternative comics and small press expo) and I'm not sure what to expect, but I know we'll have fun roaming the streets of C-bus, lingering around frat parties. There was a descent turn out this past Sunday out there in Braddock considering the non-stop weathermageddon. We crushed on tons of cheese and red wine, therefore making it an awesome time by default. It was a bunch of fun wandering around the grounds there at Unsmoke and discovering all of the secret places. It was probably the best Sunday afternoon I've had in my life thus far.

For my installation piece in Braddock I created a sort of movable painting. The idea originally came from Maura. She had considered doing something similar in the past and I felt compelled to try and substitute it for my initial plan to paint on-site. Anyway so these bad boys are made from masonite board, painted, pasted with old and new pieces and then attached to a make-shift skateboard. I'm not sure of the intent that I am trying to put forth here concerning expected results. I am just curious to see people interact with them or possibly not at all. Either way will be fine, it's indifferent to the experiment. Interaction on any level is suitable.

This Saturday that just passed (yesterday) Nate McD, Sneary and I had the wonderful opportunity to participate in an event at the Children's Museum called the Pittsburgh Parking Chair Project. The endeavor was aimed at commemorating and commentating on the Pittsburgh technique of saving your spot with a chair or whatever is at hand. It was a great turn out that included a variety of artists ranging from puppeteers, illustrators, sculptors, and traditional crafters. Here be some of the pics:

In addition to having a great day at the museum painting we also got some free t shirts from the Cotton Factory and some delicious pizza. Can't wait to go back again soon, it was some of the best fun I've had in a while.

The show in Braddock planned to happen on the 6th earlier this month has now found a new home on February 28th, 2010 fromm 3-6 pm. Extending the availability to the public into the month of March is in the talks at the moment. More info will follow as it is received. Stay tuned.

The show at Unsmoke Systems scheduled for yesterday was cancelled due to the recent and overwhelmingly inclement weather. A rain date is in the works at the moment, most likely next Saturday, the 13th. I'll be sure to update later with more info. This Friday at the Fast Forward gallery come and see some art, drink some beer, and enjoy the company of some interesting/strange folks. I've been frequenting this place lately for a few events. There has truly been some good things happening there, always a pleasant experience. The curator Craig Freeman is a pretty cool guy, he's trying to establish an atmosphere that I have yet to see in the Pittsburgh art scene. It's been refreshing. So, some of my work will be there for sale as well as some stuff by Steph Neary , Jes Lavecchia , Nate McDonough , Megan Shalonis , and Seth Ladonne among others. It's only $5 for refreshments (beer) and the art I do believe will be reasonably priced. So make it there or else.

I had the pleasure of working on this beauty right here. I work for a division of the City of Pittsburgh that is designed to employ active Arts awareness and serve as an outreach to primarily the youth in our communities, but also the general population. I was asked to create a flyer for our summer program the Roving Art Cart (an arts and crafts service to the parks). I focused the print material around a funky little drawing I did and my boss liked it so much that she wanted me to lead a project in translating this drawing into a fully realized art car/float to appear in the New Year's Eve parade downtown. It was a blast an quite an undertaking considering we only had 7 days from planning to complete execution.

Sneak Preview - Braddock

The collective show in February is near approaching. I have a few of things in mind for a while now and this will be one of them. I won't release any further details, I fear it may impair an element of surprise when it is revealed next month. I assure you that it will be interesting though. Speaking of the show I should probably plug it huh, Here's some of the promotional material.

The Opening Reception is on February 6th from 7 - 10 pm. Hope that all of you can make it. There's gonna be some refreshments (most likely cases of beer and wine). In addition to the festivities I believe Nate and I and maybe some other folks plan to have some publications and other things for purchase. It should be an eclectic experience. Can't wait for the outcome.

It's been quite some time since I have last posted anything on here. I've been buried under several projects, that has made it hard to attend to regular internet participation. Two projects that have consumed my time are preparing for the show in Braddock in February as well as work being done soon for Red Lobsters, a graphic novel collaboration between myself, Nate McDonough and Julie Sokolow. Unfortunately our work was not selected to participate this year in Pittsburgh's Handmade Arcade. I am a bit disappointed, however it wasn't a total loss because it was something that I felt necessary for my own personal growth. It was sort of like a validation of my work and apparently I have a lot more to work on. Although I was informed that three times the amount of people applied this year compared to last year. So that provides some comfort. I may not have been accepted into this craft fair Nate and I plan to hit some other venues to sell our wares. In particular, Space, an independent and small publication comic convention in Columbus, OH scheduled to take place in the spring of 2010. Keep on plugging, right folks?

These are a few drawings from my new sketchbook. I have practically abandoned my old one for this one. It was a bit expensive, but it is certainly worth it. It's a moleskine 8" x 5" with archival quality, acid free watercolor paper. So no bleeds for me. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

I'm all ready to take mine and Nate's work to Handmade Arcade this year. I've broken down my wares I plan to sell into 4 groupings. Those being magnets/birdhouses, sketchbooks/publications, apparel/prints, and original work. It's truly all original work and each piece is unique, however most of the merchandise is reasonably priced and serves a function unlike the paintings and drawings. My friend Nate is most likely bringing a ton of comics and maybe some prints or something. Hope that we are accepted, we will know by mid-October.

For the past 4 months or so I have been meeting with a group of artists in discussion lead by my former instructor Maura Doern Danko. Typically our discussions were about observing the broad spectrum of art through the ages and attempting to overlap ideas rooted in extracting meaning. The meeting have come to a head and we are embarking on a show based in Braddock, PA at a place called Unsmoke Systems. On Monday Andre, Nick and I traveled up to Braddock to check out the space, meet with the gallery managers, and discuss possibilities for the interior. Upon inspection of this amazing gallery I have a strong desire to do some on-site painting along with some installations utilizing the space's unique architectural and accidental features. I can't wait to coop up in that building in December and really explore those walls. The show will be in January and I believe it will run for the entire month. As always I will keep everyone updated with plenty of photographs when I get the time.

The latest comic soon to be available for everyone. This one is a collaboration between myself and Nate McDonough, a fellow art friend. Nate and I came up with the general concept one day at work. He wrote out the dialogue and narrative direction. And I created art for the interior and the cover. This nice little 24 pager is a combination of my interpretation and his. We plan to screenprint the covers and hope for them to be available by at least October. If you would like one please order now as we may print small quantities. And at $2.50 a piece you can't afford not to. Also I will consider a barter of some sort.

I now work for a division of Pittsburgh's Parks and Recreation Dept. called Citiparks Special Programs. This division of civil service focuses and services the city with creative support and every year we present an event called Storywalk to benefit early literacy. This was my first year, I had no idea what to expect and I was surprised at how large it was. The event drew a crowd of about 7,000 people. Top is an ant from a children's book that I recreated and bottom is a 8.5 feet tall Kangaroo of my own design. It was quite an undertaking.

Catching that textile fever folks. My good friend Steph enlightened me to the existence of a website yesterday that specializes in printing textiles based on user created content. If that wasn't cool enough, yesterday just happened to be free sample day in which you could send two of your designs and have them printed on an 8"x 8" square of fabric for free!!! These are the two I decided upon. I can't wait to get them. The question that remains is exactly what I am going to do with them.

This birdhouse is the first out of ten in a series of collaborative effort with my pops. My father made ten birdhouses about a month ago and we agreed that he would make them and I would paint them and that we might try to sell them. This first one is for my sister as a birthday gifty. I hope to get working on more soon. If you would like one with some specific imagery please let me know and I can do my best to match the description. They're fairly cheap too, they range in price from $15 - $40 depending on complexity.

A poster I designed for a friend of mine's band called The Slant. He wanted to incorporate several visual elements such as Paul Bunyon, covered wagon, an organ, and portraiture among many others. I did my best to cram them in there while still retaining interest. I think it turned out fairly well, I'm especially pleased with the type. I really tried to stay focused and concise on the smaller lettering.

Here is another little sketchbook i constructed and decorated. This one is different fro the rest in the way that it is hardbound in cardboard enclosed around multiple blank paper booklets. Observed from traditional bookmaking techniques. I hope to master this craft with what little tools I do have.

Here is the portion where I like to indulge myself in the rare occasion of plugging both myself and others. Above is a product designed by myself soon to be available towards the end of the summer under the supervision and support of a company I will be working with closely known as Apply Stuff. You may be wondering exactly what that product is. Well I intend to inform you. It is a removable vinyl graphic that can be applied to one's wall or practically any non-porous surface. This is just a small example of the types of work one can expect in the future. I have been working with these folks for well over a 6 month period now and it has been a pleasure. They have just now begun to assimilate the structures of their company, they now have an office/studio space and are well into the completion of the website. I like the first one better but they went with the latter. Oh well I got 360 bones for it so I'm not complaining.
